Delayed at the airport: meals, hotel and your right to care

Even when no fixed compensation is due, airlines must look after you during a long wait. This right to care applies as soon as the delay reaches a set length.

Check my compensation

No win, no fee: 25% of the compensation, VAT included, no other fees, only if we win your claim. FlightClaimHQ is a trading name of TETRIS GROUP LLC.

When the right to care starts

The right applies when the delay at departure reaches two hours on flights up to 1,500 km, three hours on flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and four hours on longer flights.

What you are entitled to

Meals and refreshments in proportion to the waiting time, and two free communications such as calls or emails. If you have to stay one or more nights, the airline must also provide hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and the hotel.

Keep your receipts

If the airline does not provide care, spend a reasonable amount on meals and accommodation, keep the receipts and claim the cost back afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Does the right to care depend on the cause of the delay?

No. Care is due even when the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances.

What counts as a reasonable expense?

Basic meals, drinks and an ordinary hotel. Luxury expenses are generally not refunded.

Can I get compensation as well as care?

Yes, if the delay or cancellation also qualifies for fixed compensation.
