French pilot and cabin crew strike of 17 to 21 October suspended
Published · FlightClaimHQ
The five-day national strike by pilots and cabin crew working under French law, planned from 17 to 21 October 2026, was suspended on the evening of 9 October after concessions from the French government, TourMaG reported. The unions stress that the suspension is not a cancellation and that they remain vigilant.
What was planned
Five flight crew unions, SNPL (pilots), SNPNC-FO, SNGAF, UNAC and UNSA PNC, had filed a national strike notice covering all flight crew employed under French labour law, from 00:01 on 17 October to 23:59 on 21 October 2026, Paris time. Reports at the time named Air France, Transavia France and Corsair among the airlines most exposed. The dates coincided with the start of the French autumn school holidays.
The dispute concerned the reform of the rules for combining a pension with work (cumul emploi-retraite) for people whose first basic pension starts on or after 1 January 2027. The unions wanted aircrew and their supplementary pension fund, the CRPN, kept out of the reform.
Why the strike was suspended
According to TourMaG, the unions obtained a new Labour Ministry circular addressed to the national pension fund (CNAV) rather than to the CRPN, a motion adopted by the CRPN board, and the promise of an imminent decree. Under this approach, reductions to a crew member's CRPN pension would only start once a basic state pension is claimed.
The unions said they could mobilise again if the government does not follow through, in particular by publishing the decree. In the reports we reviewed, we found no new national strike notice for these dates.
What it means for flights between the UK and France
With the notice suspended, flights between the UK and France should not be affected by this particular strike. AeroCorner notes that in France, crew whose absence would directly affect flights must tell their employer at least 48 hours ahead, and airlines must inform passengers at least 24 hours before a disruption, so any revived strike would normally be visible a few days in advance.
Other causes of delay, such as weather or air traffic control restrictions, remain possible during the busy holiday period, so it is still worth checking your flight status before leaving for the airport.
Your rights if a flight is cancelled or delayed
Flights from the UK are covered by UK261, and flights from France by EU261, as are flights to France with an EU airline such as Air France. Fixed compensation of £220, £350 or £520 under UK261, or €250, €400 or €600 under EU261, applies when you arrive 3 hours or more late or your flight is cancelled less than 14 days before departure.
Whether a strike counts as an extraordinary circumstance depends on the facts. The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that a strike by an airline's own staff over their working conditions is generally not extraordinary; a strike against a government reform is a less settled question. Whatever the cause, the airline must provide meals and, if needed, a hotel, and offer a refund or an alternative flight if it cancels.
